Determine the level of toxins in the body and their locations and effects. Toxins tend to build up over time in the body. Toxic pollutants and wastes in the body are causing adverse genetic changes, snp's, oxidative stress and disease processes, and are playing an increasing role in the development of diseases and illnesses due to increasing levels of environmental pollution worldwide.

In 2005, the Environmental Working Group published a report by Jane Houlihan and Timothy Kropp titled 'Body Burden : The Pollution in Newborns'. The placenta cord blood of newborn babies was tested for 413 different industrial chemicals and heavy metals. 287 dangerous chemicals and heavy metals were found in the babies, including PCB's, mercury, DDT, dioxins, fluorinated hydrocarbons, organo-phosphates, and many other types of Persistant Organic Pollutants. This blood was obtained from newborn babies, their first few days of life.

The research of Dr. Malcolm Hooper in Britain points to toxins, chemicals and heavy metals playing a role in ME patients. Many ME patients have high levels of toxin exposure including heavy metals, toxins and chemicals in the body, organophosphate and chemical exposure, and these toxins can create severe immune system dysfunctions, compromising of the blood-brain barrier, and neurological abnormalities, mitochondria daamge and dysfunctions, and many of the other symptoms commonly found in ME. Researchers now believe that there are sub-groups of ME patients whose immune system, nervous system, blood-brain barrier, mitochondria and krebs cycle, glands, HPA axis, liver, kidneys and brain have been compromised by toxin poisoning. And this makes patients more susceptile to infections, including chronic, systemic infections.

Research shows that mercury and nickel are implicated in many ME cases. Both heavy metals have destructive effects on the mitochondria, the immune system, the glands and HPA axis and the nervous system. Mercury fillings in teeth are now banned in several countries and states due to the dangers mercury poses to human health. Chronic mercury poisoning is linked to MS, Parkinsons, ALS, Alzheimers and several othe neurological illnesses. Chronic mercury poisoning and nickel poisoning shares many symptoms with ME, Fibromyalgia and other autoimmune illnesses. Chronic heavy metal poisoning is an important co-factor in many illnesses and may be an underlying cause in some.

Toxline is the main international database for storing scientific research papers regarding links between industrial chemicals, agricultural chemicals and heavy metals in food, water, some medicines, and air and human illnesses and diseases. We would encourage you to visit and use the facilities on Toxline
http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/htmlgen?TOXLINE

Research shows that there are 200 toxic chemicals, heavy metals and pollutants in the umbilical cord of babies when they are born. Since 1945 there has been a massive increase in environmental toxins which has found it's way into human food, water, liquids, air and human bodies, and there has been an accompanying increase in toxin related illnesses such as Cancers, neurological illnesses and autoimmune diseases, including ME and Fibromyalgia. These disturbing facts and the scientific evidence are detailed in the book The Autoimmune Epidemic By Donna Jackson Nakazawa (Touchstone. 2009). and in Dr. Noel Rose's excellent book The Autoimmune Diseases . It is known that toxins can damage mitochondria and interfere with the Krebs cycle, and also interfere with neurological, endocrine and immune system functions and with the genes. These are the main problems in ME.

Tests

(a) Test for heavy metals in the body

  • Toxline web site provides useful medical and scientific research findings.
  • Information on the toxic effects of mercury fillings in teeth and listings of dentists who will remove this poison - http://www.toxicteeth.org
  • MTHFR gene mutation found in some ME and CFS patients
The Human Genome Project found that this gene has been found to be mutated or abnormal in many people. Some ME and CFS patients have this genetic abnormality. This causes methylation cycle blockage, immune system abnormalities, thyroid and endocrine abnormalities, excess inflammation, antioxidant deficiencies, high homocysteine levels, arteriosclerosis and cardiac abnormalities, fatty liver, increased Cancer risk, neurotransmitter abnormalities and mood disorders, IBS, detoxification deficiency, multiple chemical sensitivity, cell growth and maintenance abnormalities. All of these are commonly found in ME and CFS patients.

(b) Test for organophosphates, chemicals, toxins, radioactive particles and carbon monoxide levels in the body

  • Test for evidence of cholinesterase inhibition in the patient. This is a reliable marker of toxin exposure and persistence in the body.
  • Chromosonal damage in subsets of ME/CFS patients
Dr. Heng of Wayne State University (USA) found serious chromosone breakage in 100% of ME/CFS patients using spectral karyotyping. 53% were identified as having chromosome translocations, often considered to be a recognized stepping stone of the cancer initiation process. Details provided on the NCF web site at http://www.ncf-net.org/PressReleases.htm#nfc
    • Test for chromosone damage using spectral karyotyping equipment used by Dr. Heng
    • Test for internal radionuclides and radioactive particles in patients. These would be sources of regular exposure to radiation, capable of causing chromosone damage.
Research articles concerning radiactive particles in the environment and food chain and the development of Cancers, immune system, endocrine and neurological illnesses - http://www.ncf-net.org/radiation.htm
  • Test for glyphosate levels in urine. This toxin is present in many foods and liquids

(c) Test for Mycotoxins

  • Molds and Mycotoxins and Chronic immune system activation
Myoctoxins have been found in high percentages of ME patients. One study found that 93% of ME patients had mycotoxin exposure, with many having multiple mycotoxin exposures, while none of the healthy controls had evidence of mycotoxin exposure. Mycotoxin exposure has been proven to lead to immune activation, in particular a chronic inflammatory state, and to endocrine system and nervous system abnormalities all which are consistently found in ME patients. Dr. Paul Cheney, Dr. De Meirleir and Dr. Peterson are now using tests for mycotoxins as part of their diagnostics protocol for ME / CFS. See Section - Tests for chronic inflammatory immune response to molds and mycotoxins

(d) Test Liver, Kidney & Lymph Detoxification Profiles

  • Liver Detoxification Profile
Go to a Hepatologist and use the services of a Hepatologist. A Hepatologist has special expertise in this area and should be able to advise on a course of tests and treatments and lifestyle changes. The Hepatologist will also need to liase with your medical doctor. Some private labs may also offer these Liver tests.
    Test for the following:
    • Test Phase 1 Liver Detoxification. This is overactive in ME patients. Raised P-450 enzymes. Caffeine Clearance test (Phase 1 CYP1A2). This generates a build up of toxins in the body. Dr. Jeffrey Bland, US Institute for Functional Medicine
    • Test Phase 2 Liver Detoxification. This is deficient and fails to clear the toxins from the body in ME patients. Caffeine Clearance test, Benzoate conversion (Phase 2 Glycine Conjugation). Dr. Jeffrey Bland, US Institute for Functional Medicine
    • Test the following Liver functions - Glutathione conjugation, Sulfation, Methylation, Glucoronidation, Glycine conjugation, Lipid Peroxides, Oxidative stress

(f) Ciguatera poisoning
Since 2001, scientists and researchers have consistently found ciguatera poisoning in over 80% of CFS patients. We know that CFS patients test abnormal by three different scientific methods which include (A) Dr. Yoshitsugi Hokama's monoclonal antibody based ciguatera test (University of Hawaii Medical School); (B) Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) neuroblastoma test; (C) Competitive assay using the synthetic fragment of ciguatera. This is a very unusual finding and some scientists believe that this represents a unique sub-grouping of patients with CFS. The symptoms of ciguatera poisoning are almost identical to those of CFS.
